The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), a collaboration of UI LABS, is a world-class, first-of-its-kind manufacturing hub that aims to digitize American manufacturing. The centerpiece of its headquarters on Chicago’s Goose Island is a 24,000-square foot manufacturing floor that showcases how to employ data in the machines and technology across the supply chain to make products better, faster, and more cost-competitively.
Prior to a tour of the manufacturing floor from DMDII’s Director of Manufacturing R&D, Tony Del Sesto, participants will hear an overview of DMDII including the story behind its creation within the Manufacturing USA, its projects and areas of focus, and how to become involved in the consortium.
On the tour, participants will see DMDII’s “Future Factory” hardware build-out with digital technologies installed and subsystem testing of the various digital technologies conducted. These technologies will include advancements in materials management, operator training, and data analytics.
Following the tour, participants will convene for a presentation by DMDII’s Chief Program Officer and Executive Director, Thomas McDermott, discussing the changes and value that digital technologies will have on the factory floor of OEMs and on their supply chain in design, make, and delivery.
Soon after its founding 25 years ago in Lagunitas, California, The Lagunitas Brewing Company ranked among the nation’s fastest growing producers of craft beers. And in 2012, the company announced it would double capacity (at the time) by building a new 300,000 square-foot facility in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood in a pre-existing industrial space. The Chicago brewery started production in April 2014 and opened a taproom soon after. Smart Industry delegates will be treated to a tour of brewing and packaging operations, and see the facility’s new AGV-based system for automatically selecting and transferring finished goods from cold-storage to the shipping dock in action. One of the facility’s engineering & operations specialists will be on hand to answer questions during a post-tour sampling session.

As an Industry 4.0 pioneer, metal-fabricating giant TRUMPF opened a smart factory in Chicago in September 2017 that ‘intelligently connects’ an entire sheet metal process chain – from the initial order, to its design, manufacture and delivery. Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of this $30 million facility to see how a fully networked production system works in the real world.
