Midstream-on-Demand: Harnessing Digital Tools to Overcome Economy of Scale
As the U.S. energy boom continues to grow, existing midstream infrastructure isn’t keeping pace. Oftentimes, natural gas is the primary constraint, either due to transportation or emissions challenges. Modular, on-site gas processing skids present a solution for handling natural gas. However, this approach multiplies the complexities associated with running conventional, regional gas plants. A new operational paradigm is required to overcome this obstacle. Automation of small scale modular plants can achieve the same or even better economy of scale that could be realized at large size commercial plants. This case study describes how improved wireless networks and new digital tools enable modular gas processing plants to solve a major industrial need.
