What Manufacturers Can Learn from Smart Ship-building

Classification societies play an important role in the commercial maritime industry—providing the independent engineering and survey services needed to promote the safety of ships, offshore platforms, and their component machinery to help protect the environment. As in the industrial sector, digital technologies are beginning to impact this domain like so many others. The American Bureau of Shipping, founded in 1862, is one of the oldest, largest, and most respected classification organizations in the world, and today is using smart technologies to advance the way classification is performed.  Their groundbreaking guide entitled “Smart Functions for Marine Vessels and Offshore Units” was the first of its kind published in May 2019, and offers Class Notations for vessel and offshore owners to capitalize on their smart investments.  This presentation will provide an overview of the ABS Smart Technology approach in the maritime domain, and address the steps, opportunities, and limitations of using connected data from shipboard machinery and structures.
